Citrus and Sage Bookshop opened on South Main Street in historic downtown Brooksville, and its owner Andrea Reid is clear about what she was trying to build. In her own words: "I love Brooksville. Brooksville means a lot to me. I've always wanted to create a charming place where you can escape reality, and not be judged by what you're reading, and where you can enjoy every genre." That last clause is the shop's whole personality. It stocks new releases across the board, but its curated strengths are romance, fantasy, thriller and mystery, the genres most likely to get a raised eyebrow elsewhere. There is a children's section as well, and the shop actively seeks out local and indie Florida authors, running an application process for writers who want to be stocked. The programming is where a small bookshop either becomes a community fixture or does not, and this one has gone all in. Six book clubs run out of the shop: Little Readers Club, Tween to Teen, a Fantasy club, a Spicy club, the Good Time Bookclub, and the Tidal Book Club, which meets across town at Tidal Brewing's taproom rather than in the shop. Author signings, craft and paint nights, and a seasonal Storybook Market fill out the calendar. Beyond physical books, the shop sells audiobooks through Libro.fm and ebooks through Bookshop.org, both of which route a share back to the shop rather than to a national retailer, and it runs a monthly surprise shirt subscription.
