Deep South Family BBQ

7247 Cedar Ln, Brooksville, FL, 34601

Deep South Family BBQ is a family-run smokehouse in Hernando County with a story that begins long before the first rack of ribs hit the pit. In 1998 the business started as a boiled-peanut stand, the kind of roadside operation that depends on repeat customers and word of mouth. More than two decades later, it has grown into a full barbecue restaurant, led today by owner Karli Geer, that still runs on the same principle. The menu is built around slow-smoked meat. Brisket, burnt ends, ribs and pulled pork anchor the board, and each is available as a sandwich or as a full dinner plate. Sandwiches start at about $8.50, and dinners generally run from roughly $17 to $22, which keeps a family meal within reach. The sides and desserts lean firmly Southern. Two items in particular have developed a following of their own: the fried biscuits, and the fried peach pie that closes out the meal for many regulars. Beyond the dining room, Deep South handles catering by the tray, a practical option for church suppers, office lunches, graduation parties and family reunions. The restaurant asks for about one week of notice on catering orders, so larger gatherings are best planned ahead. Guests can dine in, order takeout, or sit outside, and a kids' menu and free parking make it an easy stop for families. Gift cards are available, and the business is women-owned. The restaurant reports being named among the winners of the Best of Florida BBQ competition in both 2024 and 2025. Regular hours are Wednesday from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday. As with any smokehouse, popular items can sell out late in the day, so calling ahead before a special trip is a sound idea.
