Hernando County Public Library System
238 Howell Ave, Brooksville, FL, 34601
The Hernando County Public Library System is the county's free public library, with branches in Spring Hill and Brooksville and a mission to provide spaces where all are welcome to discover, create and learn. Its system address is the Main Library at 238 Howell Avenue in downtown Brooksville, and its Spring Hill branch, the Harold G. Zopp Memorial Library, sits at 9220 Spring Hill Drive. Hernando County residents can get a library card at no cost by applying in person at any location with a photo ID and proof of a local address; children under 18 need a parent or guardian. Non-residents can buy a card for $15 a year. Cardholders also gain borrowing privileges at participating libraries in the Tampa Bay Library Consortium. Beyond printed books, the system lends digitally through Libby and Hoopla, and it provides access to Flipster magazines, the Florida Electronic Library and learning and research tools that include LinkedIn Learning, Mango Languages, Fold3 and HeritageQuest. Wireless printing is available at every branch, at 10 cents a page for black and white and 50 cents for color. Meeting rooms can be reserved for free by nonprofit and public-purpose groups through an online application, and the system also offers interlibrary loan, a seed library with free seeds and planting information, free museum tickets for cardholders and a "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten" program for young readers. Hours changed on October 5, so check before you go. According to the library's website, the Spring Hill branch is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is closed Sunday and Monday. The Main Library is open Monday from noon to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is closed on weekends. The East Hernando Branch, at 6457 Windmere Road in Brooksville, is open Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The system's fourth branch, West Hernando at 6335 Blackbird Avenue, has been temporarily closed since May 11, 2026, and county officials have proposed closing it permanently as part of budget cuts, so confirm its status with the library. All branches share one phone number, (352) 754-4043. Programs and events are listed on the library's online calendar, and the system is on Facebook and Instagram at @hernandolibrary.
