Hernando County Sheriff's Office

18900 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, FL, 34601

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is the county's primary law enforcement agency, headquartered at 18900 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville and led by Sheriff Al Nienhuis. For emergencies, call 911. For everything else, the non-emergency line is (352) 754-6830. The agency does considerably more than patrol. It runs the county detention center, provides civil process service, and operates Hernando County Animal Services. Its records division is the office most residents actually need: it handles public records requests, fingerprinting, and criminal and sex offender registration. The records custodian is available weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM, while the main office runs 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday. The community programs side is worth knowing about because most of it is free and most residents do not know it exists. Crime Watch and Crime Stoppers are the two most visible. The Citizens Academy gives residents a structured look at how the agency operates. Youth Education Services works with students in the county. Crime prevention initiatives include the COPPS Unit, BENS, and Eyes on the Street. The agency also coordinates victim services and runs a volunteer program. Community alerts, dispatch information, and the current roster of command staff are all posted on hernandosheriff.org. The agency is also active on Facebook, which is generally the fastest place to see road closures, missing person alerts, and incident updates. The Cortez Boulevard building also houses Hernando County Emergency Management, which is a separate county department with its own responsibilities.
